“We need to take lessons from Europe and think about how we could make a non-GP-based healthcare system work”

Douglas Carsewell NHS

On his blog, Carswell also attacks the system of paying GPs, which he … errrrr … supported and voted for in the form of the Lib Dem/Tory coalition’s Health and Social Care Act.

But perhaps it’s not all that surprising Carswell wants more drastic changes to the health care system — because he never seems to have been all that keen on the NHS anyway.

In 2008, Carswell (who was then a Tory MP) co-wrote a book in which he proposed wealthier patients should be able to “opt out” of the NHS:

“Allow patients to opt out of the NHS and pay their contributions into individual health accounts”
In The Plan: Twelve Months to Renew Britain Carswell also referred to the NHS as “the national sickness service” and said that health care being free at the point of use was just a “political slogan”:

“It will not do to accuse reformers of seeking to ‘Americanise the NHS’ nor to keep repeating ‘Free At The Point Of Use’ as a political slogan”
Carswell has also consistently voted to remove restrictions on the amount of income earned from private charges — a major front in the gradual privatisation of the NHS.
